How to view photo metadata on iPhone
A photo is more than its visible pixels. Your iPhone can store its capture time, location, camera model and camera settings alongside the image.
Check a photo in Apple Photos
- Open the photo in the Photos app.
- Swipe up, or tap the Info button.
- Review the date and time, filename, camera information and map shown below the photo.
Apple documents these controls in the iPhone User Guide. The details shown depend on the file and how it reached your library.
What the information means
- Location: GPS coordinates or a mapped place associated with the image.
- Capture date: when the photo reports that it was created.
- Camera: device, lens and exposure information stored in supported fields.
- EXIF and related metadata: structured fields used by cameras and photo software.
Viewing is not the same as removing
Apple Photos lets you adjust or remove a photo's location. Its sharing Options screen can also withhold location for that share. Those controls are enough when location is your only concern.
